life after a heart attack

A heart attack is without a doubt a life-changing event. Thanks to modern technologies and surgeries, most people are able to recover and live a fulfilling life after a heart attack. However, as a victim of heart disease it is recommended you make certain lifestyle changes to live a long and healthy life.  According to Heart and Stroke Canada there are an estimated 70,000 heart attacks each year in Canada. That’s one heart attack every 7 minutes.

Your doctor may prescribe lifestyle changes in the following areas to combat the chances of having another heart attack:

Diet
A heart attack happens when blood is not properly flowing to the heart muscle resulting in a lack of oxygen. The improper flow can be due to a blockage created by a buildup of white blood cells, cholesterol or fat. This is why following a healthier diet is such a powerful tool in heart disease prevention and treatment. Get on a heart healthy diet using this Heart Healthy Eating Guide for your Family.

Smoking
Smoking contributes to the buildup of plaque in your arteries, increases the risk of blood clots, reduces the oxygen in your blood, increases your blood pressure and makes your heart work harder. After one year being smoke-free, you cut your risk of smoking-related heart disease by half. For resources on how to quit, visit You Can Quit Smoking.

Stress
The relationship between stress and heart disease is not as clear as other factors, but nonetheless is important to your overall health. Stress can lead to overeating, lack of sleep, unhealthy consumption of alcohol and smoking.

Physical Activity
Physical activity will be an important part of your path to recovery.  Getting in 30 minutes of exercise everyday is not only as simple as going for a walk, but also decreases the risk of Type 2 Diabetes, cancer and heart disease. With an adequate recovery plan working with your healthcare provider, you can seriously diminish your risk of further heart damage and live a long heart-healthy and happy life.
